Here are the guides and walkthrough for Zakat using Only The Quran.

وَمَا آتَيْتُمْ مِنْ رِبًا لِيَرْبُوَ فِي أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ فَلَا يَرْبُو عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَمَا آتَيْتُمْ مِنْ زَكَاةٍ تُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُضْعِفُونَ

[30:39] And whatever you have given out of usury-interest (3:130) to have-gains-of-interest within the wealth of people will not have gains-of-interest with Allah. But whatever you have given out of Zakat (donation), desiring the Face of Allah – then they are those who are the Doublers/Multipliers.

There Are Two Major Forms Of Zakat:

Soul-Cleansing Zakat

Rule 1A: Salat-Prayer Cleanses Your Soul

Zakat itself is a form of soul-cleansing (tazakkā f.5 v.) as said in 35:18 through Salat-Prayer and that is also said in 87:14-15 (87:14 tazakkā & 87:15 faṣallā).

You will notice that, Salat-Prayer and Zakah are mentioned together in most cases in the Quran.

Rule 1B: Do Not Claim You Are Cleansed

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يُزَكُّونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ بَلِ اللَّهُ يُزَكِّي مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا

[4:49] Did you not see those who ascribe themselves/their souls cleansed/pure (yuzakkūna anfusahum)?
Rather, Allah cleanses/purifies (yuzakkī) whoever He wills, and they will not be wronged a single date-thread.

الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنْتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ
فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ

[53:32] …So do not ascribe yourselves/your souls cleansed/pure; He is most knowing with whoever fears/is god-conscious.

Aren’t the verses self-explanatory?

Rule 1C: Obeying Allah & His Commands are Forms of Zakat

فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا فِيهَا أَحَدًا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا حَتَّىٰ يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ وَإِنْ قِيلَ لَكُمُ ارْجِعُوا فَارْجِعُوا هُوَ أَزْكَىٰ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ

[24:28] And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you.
And if it is said to you, “Go back,” then go back; it is purer/azkā for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.

The verses speak for themselves right?

Rule 1D: Lowering Eyesight & Guard Chasity

قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ

[24:30] Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them.
Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.

Do the verses not provide a clear explanation?

Giving Zakat Donation

Rule 2A: Spreading the Message/Book of Allah

You can give it by spreading the Message/Book of Allah and the Wisdom like Messengers do in 2:129, 2:151, 3:164, & 62:2, it will yuZakkīhim – cleanse their souls.

Rule 2B: Give Money/Wealth

الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

[92:18] The one who gives his wealth/monies (mālahu) yataZakkā – to self-cleanse-himself (v. f5).

This is the most common form of Zakat known today. Due to this definition in 92:18, Zakat can be interpreted as ‘Mandatory-Donation‘.

Rule 2C: Sadaqat/Charity is a Form of Zakat

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ صَلَاتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
[9:103] Take from their wealth/monies (amwālihim) a Charity (ṣadaqatan), purifying them (tuṭahhiruhum) and cleansing them (watuZakkīhim) with it. (…)

Thus, Donation/Zakat is the object that is being given such as money, clothes, food, etc.
Charity/Sadaqat is the act of giving the items to someone that may need it.
