Contact UsCharity and Giving
9 questionsFirst of all, God said so. The Quran teaches that charity benefits your soul and brings you closer to Allah’s approval (2:272). It’s an act of sincerity, not for recognition, and Allah promises fair repayment for every Hasanat without injustice.
Once a donation is made, it cannot be refunded. In Islam, charity is a sacred act done purely for the sake of Allah. When you give in charity, it becomes a trust — no longer your possession to reclaim. The Qur’an clearly guides believers not to take back or invalidate what they have given. Allah ﷻ says: “Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of it] or with injury will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:262) “O you who believe! Do not nullify your charities with reminders or injury, like the one who spends his wealth to be seen by people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:264) “Indeed, those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure will have their reward with their Lord.” (2:265) “And do not take back anything you have given them.” — Surah An-Nisā’ (4:20) “Didn't they not know that - -Allah-He- Accepts the Repentance from His servants, - And He takes the charities? - And that Allah - He is the Accepting of Repentance/Redeemer, the Merciful?“ (9:104) These verses together teach that once a gift or charity is given, it should never be reclaimed or treated like a transaction. Therefore, all donations are final and non-refundable, as they are given for the sake of Allah and immediately allocated to help those in need.
You can give both according to 2:271 as publicly is considered a 'ni'im'/an excellent thing. However, privately has other benefits like expiating your misdeeds. And Allah rewards both, as He is fully aware of your actions. So feel free to be featured on AF Donor Wall 😊.
Charity is for the needy, homeless, those devoted to Allah’s cause, workers managing charity, those uniting hearts, freeing slaves, helping those in debt, and travelers in need (9:60, 2:273). It also extends to parents, relatives, orphans, and the poor (2:215).
Give from your excess wealth—beyond what you need (2:219). The excess amount is 1/5 as said in 8:41 which encompasses all categories of what you acquired /ghanim'tum (surplus/excess after all bills/etc). The Quran encourages giving generously, day or night, secretly or publicly, and assures a reward from Allah without fear or grief (2:274).
Charity is encouraged at specific times, such as on the Day of Harvest (6:141, ex: payday or any day you receive income or capital gains), and/or when distributing spoils of war/what you acquired /ghanim'tum, where one-fifth goes to Allah, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (8:41). However, giving at any time is rewarding (2:274).
Donate from what you earned, and from what Allah has provided for you (2:267, 3:92, 76:8-9). Avoid giving defective things you wouldn’t accept yourself, and give selflessly for Allah’s sake.
Yes, don’t give Charity to seek favors, cause harm, or remind others of your generosity (2:262, 2:264). Kind words and forgiveness are better than Charity followed by injury (2:263). Also, avoid criticizing those who give Charity sincerely, as Allah condemns such behavior (9:58, 9:79).
The Quran encourages offering Charity before privately consulting the Messenger, as it’s purer and better for you (58:12). However, if you lack the means, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Charity for Allah’s approval yields abundant rewards (2:265).
Zakat
3 questionsDonation/Zakat is the object that is being given such as money, clothes, food, etc.(9:103, 92:18) Charity/Sadaqat is the act of giving the items to someone that may need it. Charity can be a form of Zakat, as both involve giving items like money or food to the needy (9:103). Both seek Allah’s approval, purify the giver, and support the community (30:39, 9:104).
Zakat has two forms: 1. Soul-Cleansing through Prayer (Salat) 2. And giving Mandatory Donations. 1. Prayer (Salat), paired with Zakat, purifies your soul (35:18, 87:14-15). 2. Giving Zakat, like Charity, increases blessings (9:103, 30:39). However, only Allah purifies souls, so don’t claim self-purification (4:49, 53:32).
Zakat includes soul-cleansing acts like obeying Allah’s commands (24:28), lowering your gaze, and guarding chastity (24:30). Spreading Allah’s Message and wisdom, as messengers do, also purifies others’ souls (2:129, 2:151, 3:164, 62:2). Giving wealth, such as money or goods, is the most common form of Zakat (92:18).
Deeds and Judgment
7 questionsHasanat (Al-Hasanah) are good deeds, synonymous with acts of goodwill, and come from Allah (4:79). Sayyiah (As-Sayyiah) are bad deeds/misleeds, resulting from one’s own actions (4:79). Both are measured by Allah and weighed on Judgment Day (7:8, 7:9).
One Hasanat is worth at least ten times (10x) its value (6:160). Allah will also double it (2x) and add a tremendous reward/huge bonus, ensuring no injustice (4:40). Spending wealth in God’s Way is like a seed producing seven spikes, each with a hundred seeds, resulting in a 700x multiplier for the Hasanat (2:261). Allah multiplies for whom He wills. So you have a minimum of 10 x 2 x 700 (100 x 7) + tremendous reward*/huge bonus = 140 000 Hasanat + huge bonus. A minimum of 1.5 million percent gain.
A Sayyiah is recompensed one-for-one, meaning it carries its exact weight without multiplication, unlike Hasanat (6:160). However, some Sayyiah do have a great value like a tremendous sin. For example, huge sins and immoralities (42:37, 53:32). And the huge sins are Shirk/Idolatry which Allah does not forgive (4:48/4:116), but He can pardon (2:52, 4:153), and the top Commandments in 17:22-39. Those huge sins and immoralities have values that Allah will determine on Judgment Day and they can easily lead to Hell on their own like Shirk, which can take all your Hasanat value and bring it to zero/nullified (39:65).
Allah doubles a Hasanat and grants an enormous reward (4:40). Additionally, He may substitute it with a better, more charitable deed (khayr), amplifying its value (28:84).
Intercession (shafa’a) can be good (Hasanat) or bad (Sayyiah). A good intercession, like preparing food for the poor on behalf of others, earns a share of the Hasanat for both parties (4:85). A bad intercession results in a share of the Sayyiah(4:85).
Yes, even an atom’s weight of a good deed (khayr, synonymous with Hasanat) will be seen and rewarded, just as an atom’s weight of a wicked deed (sharr) will be accounted for (99:7-8).
On Judgment Day, Hasanat are weighed as the Truth on a Balance. Those with heavy scales of Hasanat are successful, while those with light scales, due to Sayyiah, face loss (7:8, 23:102, 101:6-7).
